"Acoustic Music"Anyone who uses this term and implies that it is somehow superior to something else is either stupid or just terribly ignorant. All music is acoustic...if you can hear it. (Some people, including me, do hear music in their minds, as well.) Acoustic Nazis have an aversion to "electric music." Because it's too loud. So do I!! Some young singers plug in an electric guitar and try to drown themselves out. That's pretty stupid, huh? But the solution is not to throw out all the electric instruments! As usual, education is the answer. I will talk about that later. Right now, I will just say that the term "acoustic music" offends me, and disrespects a lot of wonderful musicians that have been my musical heroes for most of my life. My long-time friend Bob Kimmel has a session in his living room (in Tucson) that he calls Acoustic Music. I wish he would call it "Chamber Music" since that's what it is. Most people who fancy themselves as acoustic players (like Bluegrass pickers) wind up holding their instrument up to a microphone so that the audience can hear it. Hey, that's electric!!! Why not use a good pickup which picks up ALL of the spectrum, and not just 10 or 20%? Some people seem to think that Western Music should be acoustic to be "authentic" (whatever that is.) They're wrong. Here is some authentic western music. (It had an (electric) steel guitar in 1941.) If you still think Acoustic Music (as defined by the Acoustic Nazis) is OK, write me and we can chat. I've been playing for over 60 years* and that entitles me to an opinion. If you have one, I'll print it -- with your permission, of course. * I had my first band -- "The Honolulu Hot Rocks" -- at Little Rock High School -- in 1949. It was <gasp> accoustic, but we all gathered around a microphone. (see there!)
