Bob Wills

Bob Wills, along with his brother Johnny Lee, was from Oklahoma.  His bands played all over the area around Tulsa, and if you go in an old bar today, they will tell you "Bob Wills used to play here."  His band was called "The Texas Playboys" because that meant something in Oklahoma!! (Here's his wiki writeup.)

Bob could sing, but in 1932 he added Tommy Duncan.  Tommy really shaped the band; His record of New San Antonio Rose sold 3 million copies.

Bob was a fiddle player, but his real contribution was his vision of Western Swing, which still influences bands like Asleep At the Wheel today.

For me, the best part of this record is the (electric) guitar playing of Eldon Shamblin, whose fine rhythm runs define Bob Wills' sound for me.  In 1958, I took a semester out and played in Phoenix.  A (name forgotten) fiddle player showed me those Shamblin licks and I've been playing them ever since!!
