Musical Stops

A stop occurs at the end of a stanza... usually 8 bars.  These stops characterized the jazz of the 20's.  Carleton Coon filled in the stop with a splash cymbal, as you can hear playing. 

Along about 1930, the top hat was invented, and shaped jazz forever.  Swing did NOT have stops... the band played right through!

But Bob Wills, down in Oklahoma, heard the stops, and plugged them into his music.  You can hear his version of the same song as selection 2 on the player below.

Selection 3 is my favorite cut from Buck Owens and the Buckaroos -- who used stops as an identifier in all of their arrangements.
